"I know how much you love me. I love you too, and as your older brother, I'll watch over you. Always."
―Francis McReary, Hello, Wisconsin!

Francis McReary is the first born child and oldest brother of the five McReary siblings, and appears as the deuteragonist in Sibling Rivalries.

Description[]

Francis was the first child born to Maureen and Aiden McReary in September 1999. Francis grew up with a love for music (beginning with rap from Eminem) and video games, as Aiden let his children play Grand Theft Auto games so long as they understood the games depicted fictional events. Francis shared these hobbies with his younger brother (Maureen and Aiden's second child) Patrick, born three years later. Patrick got his signature nickname "Packie" because a three-year old Francis could not properly pronounce his name.

Francis and Packie experienced brotherly love at first sight, and were notably closer to each other than they were to their other siblings; however, they still unconditionally loved one another, with their bonds being better reflected throughout the series.

Packie considered himself and Francis to be the only "normal" siblings, as they aren't obsessed with their interests like Gerry is with football or Derrick is with teaching. However, they would grow out of this mentality and better respect one another. One hobby that Francis took up before Packie was working out at the gym, as seen in "Christopher Lavon", while Packie had no interest in such until "My Ma Said Knock You Out". Francis may work out, but he isn't crazy about playing team sports - and yet in summer 2011, Gerry talked him into trying out for the Vancouver Vultures. Famously mentioned throughout the series (and finally depicted in Sibling Rivalries: Vancouver Vultures - The Definitive Edition) was how Francis quit after the first practice. Gerry was upset, but was just happy that Francis actually tried it, unlike Packie who offered a swift "no".

Career Path and Future[]

The Season 13 comic "Rock n' Roll, Bro!" presents his interest in pursuing a career in music, which was previously revealed in Season 8 comic "Pack To The Future" where he is attending the California Institute of the Arts for college to study music. He enjoys singing in San Salvador's garage band, being described as having a great voice that can match any song that he covers. Even when the band breaks up, Francis is encouraged to continue pursuing music which he does.

Francis experiments with singing songs in different genres throughout high school. By the time he is in his mid 20's, it is hinted that he is pretty famous for his music experimentations. Thus, Francis is currently the only sibling who has had his future fate revealed, as these future scenes did not reveal what the other siblings will become in their adulthood.

Trivia[]

  • The only comics that Francis does not speak in are "Dodgeball Mishap", "Joyride", "Casa de Torres", and "O Brother, Thou Aren't Enlisted!".
  • For the first six seasons, Francis wore an all-black jacket, but was changed to a white zip-up sweater with black sleeves, the change being done to save pen ink. In-universe, Francis has mentioned that he prefers the latter sweater (appearing like this since he was a toddler in "Pack To The Past"), and would only wear the all-black sweater if he lost the other one; in "The Return of Armando Vasquez", it is mentioned that this very situation happened a year before the series began, so that is why Francis wore the all-black sweater for most of the series. It is implied that he found his old sweater again, and now only wears that again.
    • Another slight design change was how Francis' hair now sticks out of his hat from Season 7 onward.
  • Francis was meant to have the nickname "Frankie" just like his GTA IV counterpart, but the name was never mentioned out loud after Season 1 (where the name "Frankie" appears on a moving box in "Hello, Wisconsin!"). Packie calls him Frankie in Season 10 comic "Maureen Be Not Proud", but he tells Packie to please not call him that again.
  • He will grow abs by the time he is 18, as seen in "Pack To The Future".
  • "Making Quite The Buzz" reveals that he is addicted to any treat by Hostess, to the point where he is apparently a bit chubby (despite every character being drawn with slim bodies).
  • Some of the songs in Francis' music playlist, as revealed in "Rock n' Roll, Bro!" before he gets introduced to classic rock, include the following:
    • Fabolous: "Young'n" (2001)
    • Public Enemy: "Can't Truss It" (1991)
    • The Pharcyde: "Runnin'" (1995)
    • Eric B. & Rakin: "Paid In Full" (1987)
    • Pras ft. Mya and ODB: "Ghetto Superstar" (1998)
    • A Tribe Called Quest: "Scenario" (1991)
    • Wu Tang Clan: "C.R.E.A.M." (1993)
    • Mobb Deep: "Shook Ones, Pt. II" (1995)
    • Outkast: "ATLiens" (1996)
  • Francis had only appeared without his hat twice, in the comics "Trading Places" and "Pack To The Future". In the former, his hair simply looked similar to Packie's, while in the latter, it appeared very short before poofing up very tall in a comedic manner (Francis says that he needs to wear the hat to keep his hair down).
  • Francis appreciates gestures as simple as Packie giving him an "emergency roll of toilet paper" in "Extreme Gamin' Packie", later buying him a video game as a token of gratitude.
