Michael De Santa
Michael De Santa is one of the three main protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V. He is the husband of Amanda and the father of Tracey and Jimmy.
Michael's storyline involves coping with the fact that he lied to his best friend Trevor Philips and faked his death to get away from him. Trevor is angry that Michael has gone soft when really Michael wanted to protect his family. Even then, Michael's relationship with his family is strained due to his criminal activities and how he cheated on his wife (despite Amanda also doing the same). Michael must mend his broken relationships which do end well, as the game ends with his family having healthier relationships and a peaceful departure from Trevor and Franklin (the latter being whom he mentors into following in his own criminal ways).
Non-Canon Death[]
GTA V offers three possible endings for the player to take. Two of the main antagonists, Devin Weston and Steve Haines, each have their own reasons for wanting Franklin to kill Michael or kill Trevor, respectively. Franklin must choose between which of his two friends he will kill, or whether he will take the "foolish option" of saving them both and going after all of their respective antagonists.
Michael's death mission shows a selfish yet poetic side of Franklin, who kills the one that had served as his mentor for the entire game. This ending has all of Michael's family turn on Franklin, while Trevor wants nothing do with him as he isn't any worse of a traitor than Michael was.
Rockstar has confirmed that the option where all protagonists live is canon.

- Michael was a football star in high school, although a bad injury caused him to stop.
- Michael's determinant death had been foreshadowed in past missions in GTA V.
- After Michael manages to reunite his family in "Reuniting the Family", Amanda will send Michael a text message, where she says "I want to bury you, when the time comes, as your wife.". This is in reference to "The Time's Come", the optional final mission where Michael's demise happens.
- After "The Wrap Up", during the cutscene where Michael and Trevor regroup after what happened at Kortz Center, Trevor will say that they need to pull one last score (referring to "The Big One"), afterwards he says that if Michael can make it happen, he says "So that means, I won't have to put a little bullet in your head". Ironically, when Franklin decides to call Trevor to help him take Michael out in "The Time's Come", he won't help him, stating that "he has had enough traitors in his life".
